How to Play American Mahjong: A Beginner’s Guide
If you’ve been hearing about Mahjong everywhere lately, you’re not alone. This classic game is having a major comeback—especially among women (and men, too!) looking for a social, stylish way to gather and connect.
If you’re brand new, don’t worry. Mahjong may look complicated, but once you understand the basics, it becomes incredibly fun (and a little addictive).
Here’s everything you need to know to get started. And if you're wanting to explore some fashion forward and modern Mahjong mat and Tiles check out my debut collection here!

🀄 What Is American Mahjong?
American Mahjong is a tile-based game played with four players. It’s a mix of strategy, luck, and pattern recognition.
Unlike traditional Chinese Mahjong, American Mahjong uses:
- A yearly Mahjong card with specific hands
- Jokers (which add flexibility and strategy)
- Standardized rules used across the U.S.
- Blank tiles that can be interchanged and make the game a little bit easier, though using Blanks can be frowned upon with the serious players!
🀄 What You Need to Play
To get started, you’ll need:
- A full mahjong tile set (152 tiles) **My set comes out in October! Sign up for my VIP list to be notified of product release dates!
- A Mahjong card (updated yearly) I recommend only purchasing from the National American Mahjong League:
- 4 racks (to hold your tiles)
- Dice
- A Mahjong mat (makes everything feel more elevated) and the tiles slide easier!
✨ Beautiful tiles and accessories truly elevate the experience—it’s part game, part lifestyle.

🀄 The Goal of the Game
The goal is simple:
👉 Be the first player to complete a valid hand from the Mahjong card.
Each hand is made up of combinations like:
- Pungs (3 of a kind)
- Kongs (4 of a kind)
- Pairs
Once your hand is complete, you call “Mahjong!” The most fun part of the game!

🀄 Basic Gameplay Overview
Here’s a simplified version of how a game works:
- Tiles are shuffled and built into “walls”
- Each player draws 13 tiles, with the dealer starting with 14 (they discard first)
- Players take turns:
- Picking up a tile
- Discarding a tile
- Players can call tiles for matches. If you call for a tile you must expose that part of your hand.
- You may not call for Jokers and Jokers can not be used in singles or pairs.
- First person to complete a hand wins
It sounds complex—but after one or two rounds, it clicks quickly.
🀄 Why Mahjong Is So Popular Right Now
Mahjong is more than a game—it’s become a full experience.
I have found that the art of hosting is making a comeback in a major way. Gone are the days where you throw it together last minute, now we plan and prep and get giddy at then thought of our gorgeous table surrounded with lovely friends.
- Weekly Mahjong nights
- Poolside game days
- Styled tables with beautiful mats and tiles
It’s social, screen-free, and surprisingly relaxing. Pivoting away from screens and technology inspired events is exactly what I think we needed, we just didn't know it.
🀄 Beginner Tips to Get Started
- Don’t try to memorize everything at once
- Play with someone who knows the game
- Focus on learning the rhythm first
- Keep your Mahjong card nearby at all time
